  1. Hello,

    I’m having a problem with categories that includes a work that is also used in another category. I’m using the put_cat_icons function in the sidebar.

    For example I have a category called “Broadband” and another Category called “Mobile Broadband”. Each are assigned their own icon.

    But when I display the icons and category names in the side this happens. The {} is the icon image:

    {broadband icon} Broadband
    Mobile {broadband icon} Broadband

    As you can see, instead of displaying the “mobile broadband” icon in front of the category name, it instead places the “broadband” icon in front of the broadband word. Even though this is the “mobile broadband” category and link, which still links to the correct category page.

    The same happens when you use any word in a category, which is used in another category. I tested this. I also have a category called fun. And if I change my “mobile broadband” category to “mobile fun” this happend:

    {fun icon} Fun
    Mobile {fun icon} Fun

    Where as it should display:

    {fun icon} Fun
    {mobile fun icon} Mobile Fun

    Any chance there is a fix for this? Thanks.

  2. I’m trying to get the category icons to display within the “Popular Posts” widget in the
    sidebar of my site, but I just can’t seem to figure out how to get them to display. I’m
    displaying the icons perfectly everywhere else within my blog.

  3. get_cat_icon returns the icon with the surrounding tag. Is there a simple way to get the image url without the surrounding html?

    My idea is to use category icons engine to change my page background image depending upon the category being viewed. This means that everything is going to be outside the loop.

    Here is the ‘code’ I was trying to put into my header but it does not work:
    main-wrapp { background: #000000 url(); }

    Can you help me by providing me with a modified function that I can use to return just the image url of the large category icon, and then the modified version of the header include above that would work?

    I’m not a coder, but trying really hard to learn this stuff. I absolutely love the plugin and have been using it for some time now. As I was not using the large icons prior, it just seemed like a perfect use of this plugin to change my header graphic background.

    thank you

    p.s.
    If it works out, I think this would make a great faq article, as I could see a lot of people trying to use cat icons for this same purpose.

  4. hmm my code that I pasted in above did not show up, not sure how to post it here.

    Basically I was just defining th3 background url using an ‘if cat icon exists function’ and if not display the default icon.

  5. Hello,

    I have an improovment to suggest:
    in file category_icons.php you call the “ig_caticons_install” method on the “init” action.

    The consequence is that the create table request is launched at every page of the blog because the plugin is initialized for every page.

    I propose the folowing change:
    At the beguining of the file

    // Set path to the file to be able to register for hooks
    if (!defined(‘DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR’))
    {
    if (strpos(php_uname(‘s’), ‘Win’) !== false )
    define(‘DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR’, ‘\\’);
    else
    define(‘DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR’, ‘/’);
    }
    $pluginPath = ABSPATH.PLUGINDIR.DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR.”category_icons”;
    $filePath = $pluginPath.DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR.basename(__FILE__);

    // Initialization and Hooks
    $wpdb->ig_caticons = $wpdb->prefix.’ig_caticons’;
    register_activation_hook($filePath,’ig_caticons_install’);
    //register_deactivation_hook($filePath,”);
    $caticons_datas = array();

    add_action(‘init’, ‘ig_caticons_init’);

    Then create an empty “ig_caticons_init” method.
    So that later you can add initialisation data to your plugin.

  6. Hi, i`ve got a problem displaying category icons.

    Everything is ok, untill i`m on the homepage. If i click on the next page, the page loads, some images for category icons are displayed but are not loaded .. it displayes for a while an image placeholder but it disappears after a second :/ .. i don`t know if i have to make some additional edit because of page/2/ url ..

    thanks .. if you need more info, please ask ..

  7. some additional info:

    on the homepage, if i click on the image properties, i see the picture size (89×19 px), color depth (5bit) and the format as gif.

    But on the second page, if i click on the image properties .. the picture size is (0×0 px), color depth is (0bit) and is an unknown format of picture ..

    but browsing the source code, the same code is visible on both pages .. :/

  8. Hi!)
    I have 1 question, how to do, that my category icons will be one below the other? Because they automaticaly is in horizontal line…
    Thank you very much for help!)

  9. I tried to create a parameter : vertical (see the doc), but it’s not always working. It depends a lot on the css… Sorry.

  10. The icons can’t be viewed because of their wrong URL : it is wp-content/uploads/icons/dizajn-tag.gif in the src (it’s good for the first page, because the url is your website root), whereas it should be http://testing.sk/wp-content/uploads/icons/dizajn-tag.gif

    You should modify the options (URL to Icons and/or Local Path to Icons) in Category Icons. You can help me too by donating or click on the a_d_s…

  11. you were right, now comparing the icon links .. i see it .. thank you very much ..

    ok, i can click on some ads if it will be helpful ;) ..

  12. I installed your plugin on my test system (MAMP running on a mac book) and it worked beautifully and I loved it. When I moved everything up to the actual server, I hit a snag. Downloaded the plug-in through the wp plugins manager thing, seemed to work fine, but when I went to the icons tab to assign icons to categories, it wouldn’t actually assign them.

    I’d click on a category, and it would go to the page for that category – with the two select boxes for small and large icons. I could select icons, and the images would appear in the appropriate places. But when I clicked the select icons button like I had done previously on the test system, the icons would not be displayed on the list of categories, and they don’t show up anywhere on the blog.

    I deleted the plugin, and re-installed it – same problem. I checked the permissions on the folder for the icons, and set it to 777. I can’t figure it, because they show up to be selected, and then nothing happens.

  13. @Stephen

    I think that it’s just a problem with the path to the icons. Could you put an URL to your website in order to look at the path you use ?

  14. Here’s a link to a test post: http://perfidy.org/test-post/ The category icons would normally appear above the date in the post meta area.

    In the settings in my test environment, the local path to the icons was:

    wp-content/uploads/icons
    http://localhost:8888/blog/wp-content/uploads/icons

    On the live site, I have it set to:

    /wp-content/uploads/categories

    There was already a folder there, so the name is different, but the relative location is the same as “icons” on the test wp.

    It seemed weird that I could see, and pick icons on the individual cat pages, but then them not show up on the list of cats page.

  15. I’ve tried that one, and variations on it. The cat-icon div is just for formatting. In the index file, this is the part with the icons:

    <!– –>
    <?php foreach((get_the_category()) as $cat) { echo 'category_nicename . ‘/”>cat_name . ‘-26×28.gif” align=”right” alt=”‘ . $cat->cat_name . ‘” />‘; } ?>
    <?php comments_popup_link('§ 0′, ‘§ 1′, ‘§ %’); ?>

    I commented out the part with your tag, so I could implement the old, hacked up method I had used on the previous version of the site. I can get that going in a noter minute, as soon as I load up specially-named icons. The reason I wanted to use your plugin was the ease of changing icons, and for adding new categories and icons. If you want, I can provide you a temporary login to the site, and you can see what I’m talking about. The problem doesn’t lie in the display, it’s that I can’t even assign icons to categories. Just go to the contact page, and send an email to “The Ministry” and I’ll hook you up.

  16. Today, I just noticed this error Error in Category Icons : the default upload path is not accessible. Please create one or change the permissions on the directory.

    I have not changed the permissions on it and the wp-uploads directory is set to 755. I haven’t changed anything lately. Why is this not working?

  17. figured out on my own. For some reason the uploads path changed and that broke it. Don’t know why it did that.

  18. I am using the last wordpress version 2.9.1 and I have sucessfully installed the plugin but I have some (point for list item) before the category image. I guess it is caused by my theme, I am beginner with wordpress, where should I remove it ?

    Thanks in advance.

  19. The ‘Names’ are not hyperlinked in the ‘Icons’ tab. I know this is broken because wp-config.php was moved to the directory one above /public-html for security. Can this be fixed? Would like to keep wp-config out of view. Thanks

  20. Hi – ALL I want to do is echo the url itself to the specific category icon, not a giant list of a bunch of output. I’ve handled the output of the categories, but would like to also display an icon.

  21. Kyle Matthews :
    Hi – ALL I want to do is echo the url itself to the specific category icon, not a giant list of a bunch of output. I’ve handled the output of the categories, but would like to also display an icon.

    To clarify – I have the exact same issue as Shawn above, who was never answered.

  22. Yo, Sub! Category-Icons is an excellent plugin! It is very cool, and I have implemented it into Thematic. If you want the function for your use I will be happy to send it to you.

    The only problem I am encountering is an estrange character existing around the icon. A “1″ character sits above the div of the entry content. I was wondering what could it be.

    I believe I have encountered this before but do not recall how I corrected this matter. Take a look at my site for your review. The icons are on the home page.

    Peace and thanks!

  23. Yes, please, send me your function. I’ll be more than happy to publish it. The “1″ you’re talking about is between the get_cat_icons() function and before this html code :

    . Hope this helps.
  24. Here is the function snippet to execute Category Icons:

    //* Category Icons on category, archive and search pages *//
    function my_cat_icons($title) {
    if(is_category() || is_home() || is_search()){

    return get_cat_icon(‘small=false&align=left&class=entry-content-icon’) . $title ;
    }else{
    return $title;
    }

    }

    add_filter(‘thematic_postheader’, ‘my_cat_icons’);

    I next past the tag into an entry-content-icon class to play within bounds of the entry-content class as follows:

    .entry-content {
    font-size:14px;
    padding-bottom:44px;
    padding-left:0;
    padding-right:100px;
    padding-top:12px;
    }
    .entry-content-icon{
    padding-bottom:22px;
    padding-left:0;
    padding-right:10px;
    padding-top:26px;
    }

    Of course I am open for a better way because I am still a rookie.

    Thanks for the help!

  25. Sub, Category Icons is only executed through this function and CSS. As you can see in the function snippet there is no HTML being executed. It is only calling in the postheader of Thematic with a css class.

    Is there somewhere else I should look? I have checked my pages, and header to no avail. I know it is somewhere right under my nose.

    Do not post that snippet until we kill that ’1′. I believe All users are going to love using the function ability for their child themes.

  26. I am still plugging away in Thematic searching for the HTML culprit.

    In firebug, the ’1′ sits directly after the linkable icon.

    I am a noob to functions and Thematic, but this problem is actually a benefit for me to learn more about functions.php.

    I have asked the Thematic forums contributors to get involved, too.

  27. Solved! I did some homework to understand how I can simply the snippet for functions.php to rid the ’1′ character. I had a gut feeling my snippet was creating the bug with its redundant use of logic since your template tag is so cut and dry!

    Here is the snippet I used in Thematic:

    // Create Category Icons
    function my_cat_icons() {
    if( is_home() || is_category() || is_author()|| is_tag()) { ?>

    <?php }}
    add_action('thematic_postheader','my_cat_icons');

  28. Just wanted to say thanks for such a great plugin, everything worked right away and it works FANTASTIC with the recent posts plugin.

  29. This looks like a very elegant plugin and I believe it will save me a lot of coding work but I’m having trouble determining how to assign icons to categories. The plugin is installed and I uploaded the 75px by 75px icons to the default upload directory. On the icons tab, the plugin is picking up the categories but there seems to be no way to associate images with categories, as they are not showing.

    I tried adding the extract_caticonsurl function to the theme’s functions.php and adding the $caticons_url call above the wp_list_categories call but this seems a little ahead of myself if there are no icons associated with the categories yet.

    This is the PhotoNexus theme and the categories are embedded in the header. This is the first time I’ve worked with this theme so the lack of a sidebar is a little confounding.

    Here is the url: http://www.leventhalsternart.com/

    The goal is to have a different thumbnail of the artwork to the left of the category list. I’m good with CSS but the instructions for making this work seem a little confusing to me, especially with no sidebar. Please help!

    I’m also having the same problem. I’ve been through the code and cannot find anything to suggest what might be causing it. I’ve had to disable the plugin for now. On my site, you will see two categories (X-range and ZX-range). The icon is OK for xrange, but not for zxrange.

    {icon} X-range
    Z {icon}X-range

    that’s how it’s doing it…..
    Thanks for any info… I do very much love this plugin!

  31. I’m having trouble getting icons to show up next to my post title names. The template file doesn’t help at all and I have already selected icons to each category.

    http://zedam.nanuak.net/

    Now where should I look to add the code line as my theme may be different then most.

    Thanks

  32. Hi,
    Amazing plugin !! But I have a problem with this one or maybe is feedburner that is having the problem. When I use this plugins (like headline in posts), feedburner put the image after the title and date. I want the image in the same structure of my web (above of title and date).

    I like the web page with this plugin, but can I filter the image to feedburner ?

    I hope that you or someone have the answer.

    Thanks

  33. I have a strange problem (WP3.0). The plugin worked nice and I changed theme without updating my theme files. Coming back to the plugin, the images do not show in the option pages (I can choose them but they are not displayed. I sell only a text with filename and dimension). I desactivated all my plugins, change theme and it’s the same problem. But it works on another blog !

  34. Hi! This plugin has been working very well for our organization’s blog, bike-pgh.org (scroll to the bottom, under “Latest Clips from the Blog” we had category icons next to the latest titles.

    Everything worked perfectly for years, but recently I needed to add a new category & icon, so I went to the appropriate section and the plugin was broken enough that it still showed the icons on the front end of the site, but the admin area wouldn’t allow for anymore uploads. I tried updating the plugin and when I did, I could no longer see the icons on the front end, though now the backend works.

    Any ideas? I’m running WP 2.9.2 and the latest version of the plugin.

    Thanks!

  35. @Li-An

    I have an issue on WP3 as well. I have however identified that the image src is incorrect. It is showing up as:

    Notice the ( in front of http….. I can’t seem to locate the problem in the src so I don’t know where it’s being added.

  36. Marj Wyatt :

On the icons tab, the plugin is picking up the categories but there seems to be no way to associate images with categories, as they are not showing.

    I am having the same issue using the plug-in on 3.0 Multisite. The categories on the icon list are not options to click for all super admins, and one super admin can click some categories but not others to assign icons.
    Does anyone know the solution to this?

  37. @Stephen Hardesty

    I had the same issue. In my case I was leaving the “Priority” text box empty and the SQL insert statement was failing. As a result nothing was being saved (inserted into the database) once I clicked on the “Select Icons” button.

    So make sure you the Priority text box a descent integer value.

    Suggestion for Improvement: I think it would be a good idea to remove the hard coded “wp-content” folder name and replace it with the WP_CONTENT_FOLDERNAME. That’s what I had to do manually since I use a custom named content folder.

  38. Has anybody used Category Icons with the WPML plug-in (wpml.org)? I am not able to see the RU translated categories in the Category Icons admin control panel, only those in the default language (EN). Any ideas?

  39. it seems that this plugin don’t work with wp multisite.
    Here wp-admin/edit.php?page=category_icons.php&ig_module=caticons&ig_tab=icons, the link to add an icone is disabled.

  40. ok i have find the problem and i have replace if (‘administrator’ == $role || ‘editor’ == $role)
    by
    if (is_admin())

  41. Heads up on a 3.1 problem: as of a few minutes ago, the plugin is causing a javascript conflict with the admin menus in trunk. Probably something to do with the new admin bar.
